Summary of Work

As a member of the Governor’s Cabinet, the Executive Director of the Indian Affairs Commission provides vision, leadership, and collaboration to strengthen state-tribal relations and oversees the management and administration of the Indian Affairs Commission office. • Lead the development and delivery of the Commission strategy and budget.
• Serve as liaison between the state and the five tribal nations within the State of North Dakota.
• Provide direction and guidance in the implementation and interpretation of programs and services.
• Monitor key legislation impacting the Commission and the tribal nations in North Dakota and p repare and present legislative testimony.
• Represent the Commission to internal and external public and private organizations by serving on committees and advisory boards; provide expertise and information.
• Provide strategic leadership and development of Commission team members.
• Establish and implement policies to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
• Serve as a statutory member on various boards to promote Native American culture, education, health, and economic prosperity. Coordinate scheduling of quarterly commission meetings.
• Act as a resource for other cabinet and state agencies regarding state-tribal relations.

Minimum Qualifications

Exceptional written and interpersonal communication skills.

Extensive executive management experience (minimum of 5 years experience in an executive-level role).

Executive-level composure and presence.

Ability to think strategically and deliver solutions.

Analytical and decision-making ability for immediate and long-term decisions.

Capacity to plan, organize, lead, and guide all aspects of department administration including budget development and management.

Ability to develop and implement agency policies, goals, and objectives.

Demonstrated experience leading, motivating, and developing talent to achieve organizational strategy.

Enrolled member of one of North Dakota’s five federally recognized Tribes is preferred.

Knowledge of the legislative process and government operations is desirable.
